Where To See The Best Christmas Lights In Toowoomba
Toowoomba is undoubtedly famous for its exquisite gardens, but the locals also know it’s the only place to be for the best Christmas lights.
Visitors will flock to popular hotspots like Toowoomba Christmas Wonderland, but you can delve much deeper and find some terrific residential light shows with our Christmas lights guide.
Toowoomba Christmas Wonderland
If the best fireworks in Queensland are at Riverfire in Brisbane, then Toowoomba takes the cake for best Christmas light displays. Whether you’re a local or just visiting if you want to witness the crème de la crème of Christmas lights then make a night of it at the 2019 Toowoomba Christmas Wonderland.
See the Botanical Gardens in Queens Park transformed into a spectacular light show from 7–24 December. It’s just a gold coin donation to enter, and don’t worry about the kids getting bored – there’s face painting, balloon animals and free ice cream for every child.
The best street in the city
Want to explore the very best Christmas lights in Toowoomba but don’t have the time to travel all over town? Then get out to the top street in the city. Gowrie-Lilyvale Road in Gowrie Junction is about a 20-minute drive from the CBD, but you won’t regret making the trip.
Last year, the street was voted “Best Neighbourhood” for Christmas lights by The Chronicle, and this year we expect to see some even bigger and better things from the holiday-happy residents.
Toowoomba City Hall
For a night of entertainment with the family, head on down to City Hall for Toowoomba’s Christmas in the CBD. Starting at 6pm on Thursday 28 November, you’ll be entertained by local musicians before Santa arrives at 7pm. Then watch City Hall light up with a dazzling array before Santa heads over to Grand Central for the lighting of the Christmas tree in Central Square.
Visit a former winner
Want to see what the best of the best can do with a little elbow grease? Then take a trip to some of the former winners of The Chronicle’s Toowoomba Christmas Lights Competition. Every year the local newspaper puts on the event, with entrants from all over Toowoomba vying for the best visual Christmas display – and the highest electricity bills!
Take a 15-minute drive west to the outer suburb of Cotswold Hills to see the Williamson family’s display for this holiday season. The 2017 winners are well known for their light-up reindeer, gravity-defying golden stars and of course their giant blow-up Santa Claus.
