Brisbane-Toowoomba High Speed Rail Proposal On Track

A proposal to increase South-East Queensland’s public transport has reportedly included a $70 billion rail network to carry passengers from Brisbane to Toowoomba in under 45 minutes. The upgrade will also include lines from Brisbane to the Gold Coast, Sunshine Coast and Ipswich.

Infrastructure consultants, SMEC, have put together a blueprint after having been assigned the task by the South-East Queensland Council of Mayors.

The rail network would involve both existing lines and installing new ones. It is said that Toowoomba’s line would be an extension from the Ipswich connection. The initiative would aim to take thousands of cars off the region’s highways.

The report has indicated a bid for South-East Queensland to host the 2032 Olympic Games could mean the system is fast-tracked, with the original completion date set for 2041. It also proposes a City Deal-type funding agreement between the federal, state and local governments, with more than a quarter to be sourced from the private sector.

The high speed trains can travel up to 250km/h, averaging speeds of 150km/h.
