Suburb Profile: Rangeville

Perched at the eastern edge of the city and just 5km southeast of the CBD, Rangeville is an exceptional suburb that highlights the very best of Toowoomba living.

Where does the name come from?

Unlike the true origin behind the naming of Toowoomba, which remains unclear to this day, the suburb name Rangeville simply came about due to a need for clarity. As it sits right on the Great Dividing Range – which is colloquially known as ‘The Range’ – the suburb needed its own identity. Hence, Rangeville.

It was probably a good idea because nowadays people use the Range Crossing – both the original and the Second Range Crossing – to get in and out of Toowoomba.

Does Rangeville have a long history?

Jagera, Giabal and Jarowair people lived in the Darling Downs for at least 40,000 years before European settlement. Toowoomba itself saw European exploration and settlement in the early 19th century, and over the decades that followed the town expanded in all directions, mostly for agricultural purposes.

The exact dates are hard to pin down, but we do know that Rangeville State School began in earnest way back in 1909 – when it was originally called The Range State School.

What are the most popular landmarks?

Picnic Point is far and away from the most famous spot in all of Rangeville, with fantastic parkland, cafes and restaurants, and bushwalking trails all available to the wider community.

Rangeville also has a rich history to be explored. Aside from the heritage-listed Picnic Point and its adjacent parkland, the suburb is home to heritage-listed villas such as Geeumbi, home to architect Thomas Arthur Price and built during the midst of World War I, and Rodway, which gained its state heritage listing due to its importance “in demonstrating the evolution or pattern of Queensland’s history”.

Does Rangeville have a good lifestyle?

Rangeville is the ideal family-friendly suburb that will appeal to all types of buyers. It has all the essential amenities you need while still remaining a relaxed and quiet part of Toowoomba. Its parkland is clean and vibrant – truly exuding the ethos of the Garden City – and the neighbourly spirit means it’s just as popular among young families as retirees.

The only downside maybe its popularity, as demand drives up house prices. But when you’re looking for a ‘forever home’, it’s the long-term benefits of buying in Rangeville that will truly make the purchase worthwhile.

What schools are nearby?

Rangeville State School is just around the corner from most homes in the suburb, but that’s not your only option. There are plenty of private education providers nearby like Toowoomba Prep, Fairholme College, St Joseph’s and the historic Toowoomba Grammar School, as well as state schools like Centenary Heights and plenty of childcare providers.

What’s the Rangeville property market like?

Whether you’re looking to buy or rent, Rangeville has a wide variety of options. According to March 2020 data, the median house price is $451,000 to buy or $368 per week to rent, while apartment medians are $319,500 and $310 per week, respectively.

It’s a high-demand market in Rangeville, with an average of 560 visits per property – well above the Queensland average of 426 visits. But that only backs up the claim that Rangeville is one of the most sought-after suburbs in Toowoomba and an excellent place to find your next home.
